Tony Hawks And His Fridge Take Their Place In The Guinness World Records Hall Of Fame
Comedian and author, Tony Hawks, and his trusty fridge
have found their place in the Guinness World Records hall of fame after hitchhiking
over 1,025 miles round Ireland together.
Tony and the Lec fridge were officially awarded the
Guinness World Records title for Longest
Distance Travelled with a Fridge in London at the screening of the film about his
epic journey. The official distance travelled by Tony is 1,650km or 1,025.26
miles, covered when he hitchhiked round Ireland with the appliance after
accepting a drunken bet from a friend.
The book of his life-changing adventure, Round Ireland with a Fridge, went on to become
a cult classic and international best-seller and this month the film of the
story is released on DVD.
The film version of Round Ireland with a Fridge is
directed by Ed Bye (My Family, The
Detectives, Red Dwarf) and stars Tony Hawks, Ed Byrne, Sean Hughes,
Valerie O'Connor, Josie Lawrence and Sara Crowe.

Round Ireland with a Fridge is an
independently produced and financed British film and follows the fridge as it travels
in many different cars, vans and lorries, as well as taken surfing, christened,
blessed by nuns, accompanied by a bagpiper, taken to a bachelor festival and
becomes the hero of a national radio station as Tony and all those he
encountered became aware of the awesome power and philosophy of the fridge.
Tony Hawks said: “Hitching with a fridge teaches you to
put your trust in the kindness of others and not to worry about the future,
because you soon realise when you're fridge-hiking - it's a pointless activity!"
Commenting
on the achievement, Guinness World Records’ Adam Wide said: “Tony Hawks is an
almost ideal Guinness World Records record holder, exemplifying so much of what
Guinness World Records is all about. He started out with a seemingly impossible
dream and then pursued it doggedly to a successful conclusion. On his epic journey
he reveals universal themes, discovers a new faith in
humanity all of his own and also achieves a Guinness World Records title.”
A preview of the film can be seen on www.roundirelandwithafridge.com. The DVD will be available to buy
from 8th November 2010.
